2 Tier Affiliate Programs Explained

How will refering new affiliates to an affiliate program make me money in the future? Thats where a 2 tier affiliate program works like magic!

Affiliates are getting cleverer by the day. So these days, affiliates know the difference between the different types of traffic they can get paid for. There are a lot of definitions though – CPM, CPC, CPA, CPL, CPD and many more.

CPM is impressions, when the publisher (the website owner) gets paid every time a banner is shown.

CPC is clicks, where the publisher (or email marketer and other marketers) gets paid every time a banner or text link is clicked upon.

The other ways of getting paid are grouped together under the term performance marketing – and this is where the term affiliate is most commonly used as well.

An affiliate is a marketer who sends visitors to another site using a variety of methods (such as placing banners or text links on their own site, buying sponsored listings on search engines, email marketing and many other different methods) and gets paid when an action happens. This action can be a lead (CPL stands for Cost per Lead), a Sale (CPS stands for Cost per Sale), a download (CPD stands for Cost per download) and many other variations.

Some in the Internet industry refer to performance based marketing as CPA (cost per acquisition), although the term is also sometimes used for specific types of campaigns such as leads or sales.

Now that we’ve got over the hard part, the rest is easy to understand.

The affiliate gets paid for sending visitors to a specific landing page where an action happens – either a lead, a sale, a download or some other sort of action that the advertiser requires. As an example, some advertisers are looking to build up their databases, so they pay for each opt in email address they receive, others want leads from specific locations, so they pay for zip codes, and then try convince the visitors after they fill in their zip code, to fill in a more detailed lead form.

The common denominator is that the affiliate gets paid when an action happens.

A 2 Tier affiliate program is simply finding new marketers to sign up under you to do EXACTLY what you are doing – sending visitors to different offers and getting paid when the visitors perform some sort of action. So why would you want other marketers to sign up under you to promote the same offers? Simple – you get paid a percentage of the amount the affiliate you refer gets paid? Sounds complicated?

Don’t worry, it’s not hard to understand. As an example, say John promotes 5 different offers on a single affiliate network. He gets paid for every lead, sale, email and zip code he generates from these different offers. John now tells Mark about the Network and gets Mark to sign up using a banner or text link that has John’s referral code built into it. Mark now signs up to the Affiliate Network under John and starts promoting various offers and advertisers from the Affiliate Network. These offers DON’T have to be the same offers that John is promoting. Mark can promote ANY of the offers on the Affiliate Network.

And this is the best part…

For any amounts that Mark gets paid, John receives a percentage of the amount over and above what Mark gets paid. So if Mark gets paid $1000 in Month 1, and the 2 Tier Affiliate program is paying 5%, then John would receive $50 just for referring Mark.

But it gets even better…

Some 2 Tier Affiliate Networks pay LIFETIME commissions. So John wouldn’t get a referral commission just for a month or a year – he receives it FOR ALL TIME.

If Mark becomes a super affiliate and starts generating HUGE commissions every month, John can just sit back and collect the checks as he referred him.

There are 3 important things to know when finding affiliates to sign up under you on 2 Tier Affiliate Programs:

Is the affiliate program or affiliate network credible, has proper tracking so your referrals are correctly tracked, has good campaigns and offers for the affiliates to promote so they actually do make money, and do they pay timeously? Assuming that the affiliate program or network is good, what percentage do they pay you on amounts that your referrals get paid? All programs vary so compare different programs to see what the industry standard is.

How long do you continue receiving referral commissions for? Some pay for a month, some for the lifetime, and of course there are many variations in between.

So do your homework and find a 2 Tier program that can make you money long in the future for the work you’re doing today.

1. Optimize for the search engines. The most successful sites on the internet are the most visible ones. Now there are various ways to achieve increased visibility on the internet, but the foremost method is that of search engine optimization. The details are too technical to discuss here, but the purpose of search engine optimization (SEO) is to help your site achieve higher rankings on the search engines. If you have used a search engine, you will notice that any particular keyword search will return thousands, if not millions of results. Most people will not bother to browse through all those results; they will prefer to look into the sites already displayed. Statistically speaking, the sites listed on the first results page will garner the highest amount of traffic, putting those sites in a better position to make money.

What have you tried to fix the problem? If you have attempted to fix the problem yourself, be sure to include an account of your attempts in your report. Letting the support team know what you’ve already done will help them save time, and also make a more accurate diagnosis of what’s wrong.

Have you kept it simple? For security purposes, some support systems do not allow HTML display. To avoid having your e-mail intercepted, it is best to send your messages in plain text format.

Small Businesses That Blog Have 102% More Twitter Followers

A previous HubSpot article showed that blogging increases website traffic. What else, you may wonder, can blogging help your business with?

Attracting more Twitter followers is one answer.

A new study of 2,100 HubSpot customers reveals that companies that blog have 79% more Twitter followers than those that don't.

The companies in our study were all small- and medium-sized businesses with between 1-1,000 employees. All had at least one Twitter follower.
The relationship between blogging and Twitter followers is particularly strong for small businesses. We compared 942 small-business customers (customers with less than 15 employees) and discovered that small businesses that blog on average have 102% more Twitter followers than those who don't.

A study of B2B and B2C companies returned similar findings. As the chart below demonstrates, blogging increases Twitter reach by 113% for B2B companies and 30% for B2C companies.

A follow-up statistical analysis shows a relatively strong correlation between the number of blog posts published and Twitter reach, further confirming the significant role that blogging plays in building a company's base of Twitter followers.

The results of this study are not entirely surprising -- as a consumer of Twitter feeds, there's no question that the most valuable of these feeds are those that include regular updates with unique, high-quality content.

To conclude, Twitter has become a highly effective marketing tool. HubSpot data shows that businesses of different sizes and service nature can reach more potential customers via Twitter by enriching their Twitter streams with content from their blog.

So, why do B2C marketers have 100 more friends than B2B marketers? It's just not fair.

Everyone knows it is lots of fun to work for those consumer brands with big marketing budgets. While the U.S. Census Bureau still only accepts mailed-in forms, this year it's taking a lot of its efforts online to encourage citizens to fill out the 2010 form and be counted.
The Bureau's new digital initiative, which uses social media to create social awareness and motivation for people to take action, is much like we saw in Obama's presidential campaign -- using online tools to affect offline change.

And the Census Bureau is fully taking advantage of the trend. Many businesses I come across truly intend to do the right thing as far as optimizing their websites for lead-generation. However, even though they do their best to drive more traffic and execute Internet marketing campaigns that will capture and convert more leads, many of them end up in one of two buckets:

Bucket 1: â€œWe have no idea where to start given the crushing amount of available tools, opinions and advice.â€�
Bucket 2: â€œWe have all the bells and whistles (we think, anyway) but we canâ€™t seem to tie them all together so they work for us.â€�

Both scenarios are very different, but thereâ€™s one common, critical component that is almost always missing from both buckets: the up-front planning and thinking needed to create an ideal marketing engine.
When funding or budget approvals are coupled with time and resource pressures, the businesses in Bucket 1 jump right in and start frenetically implementing whatever tools they can get their hands on. These tools are often a blend of CRM apps, email campaign tools, website CMS packages, analytics packages, lead intelligence apps, etc.
Meanwhile, businesses in Bucket 2 are busy buying up all the latest fancy tools as they come along because they can afford to at the time. The tools become immediately disparate because folks using them canâ€™t get what they need out of them and frustration ensues between marketing, sales and management.

Step 1: â€œWHOâ€™S IN?â€� - Pick a Team and Assign Roles

â€¢ Get a representative from each functional area to participate (sales, marketing, web support, IT, executive sponsor). Involving whoever you can in the decision-making process tends to make them care a lot more about the outcome.

I think that filter has helped me stay true to my readers when it might be tempting to run after the next new thing.

Time, fear, big scary blank white monitor screens. You can't really practice inbound marketing tactics without committing to producing content, lots of it, over long periods of time. This is not something you can hire a consultant for, get an intern to do one week, go to a workshop, or buy a great book - you've got to make it part of the fabric of your daily life. Sorry, no magic dust.

Why Marketers Should Be Dubious of Google AdWords New Lead Capturing Tool

Do you get the feeling that Google has marketers on the mind lately? I certainly do. Not even a month after launching their Google Annotations feature for Google Analytics, Google is beta testing a new lead capturing tool for Google Adwords.

Amber from the blog PPC Hero, who recieved a invitation to Beta test the new lead capturing feature (ehem, Google calls it a â€œcontact extension formâ€�), says that it is currently limited to businesses appearing in position #1 of PPC results. If you received an invite to beta test and have ads running in position #1, your prospects have the option to click a link under the PPC ad (this can be a customizable call to action) which opens a contact form. The prospect can then use this form to submit their contact information to you without ever leaving Google search results.

Though I usually welcome any new feature that may help me generate leads, I worry that this new feature is not aligned with best lead generation practices and hereâ€™s why:

It's limited to phone leads only.

Though Amber from PPC Hero notes that Google will eventually allow you to take leads through live chat & email, right now Googleâ€™s contact extension form only accept phone leads.

The form does not demonstrate value to potential leads.

The current drop down contact form does not demonstrate the value that they'll receive or encourage them to develop a relationship with your company. If you can not demonstrate value to potential leads, you will lose out on conversions. Then there's the quality of the conversions you might actually recieve. As it stands right now the form simply screams to your prospect, â€œGive me your info so I can call you!â€� Qualified prospects are far more likely to drop their contact info after youâ€™ve created a relationship with them, so more the quality of the conversions you'd get from a limited form with only a few questions will most likely be very low.

It's an extra click for your prospect that doesn't lead them to your site.

If youâ€™re already paying the enormous PPC costs associated with appearing at position #1, wouldnâ€™t you rather have your prospect come to your site and engage with your business on your own landing page? If it's just an extra click for them anyway, you want to make the most of it and have them convert on your own terms in an environment you control.

You have to call the lead within 24 hours.

After you generate a lead, you have to call Google within 24 hours. Depending on how agile you are in qualifying your leads, this could be really taxing on a sales or marketing team, especially on the weekend. Amber from PPC hero didn't mention if there was a penalty if you didn't call your lead back, but I imagine that if there is a penalty, it would be really frustrating to have to call back a junk lead just to avoid a Google slap on the wrist.

Google owns your leadâ€™s information.

Even after you call your prospect back within Google's 24 hour window, you donâ€™t even get their phone number. Instead Google gives you a special number and a lead ID which redirects you to that customer.

You have to manage your leads with Google.

Since you have no access to the information your prospect gives you, all you are doing is creating another location where you have to manage your leads. You can't integrate with Salesforce or other lead management tools. Plus, you have to deal with each lead one-at-a-time because you have to reach them within the 24 hour window.

The feature is restricted to position #1 search results only.

You pay per lead, which is nice, but you also pay a lot for that top position. One of the issues with position #1 in Google Adwords is that it tends to generate traffic thatâ€™s unqualified because many searchers click the link without reading. One of the good things about this feature is that at least youâ€™d be getting a real lead for your money; the bad thing is youâ€™re still probably going to get expensive, unqualified traffic flooding in from your top-position ad.

This will only get you end-sales-cycle-leads.

Itâ€™s possible that this strategy will only connect you with people who are ready to talk. Perhaps thatâ€™s all youâ€™re looking for with your PPC campaign, but it's not the best overall lead generation strategy. Since most people don't hand over their number until they've built a relationship with you first, you probably won't be generating a lot of new leads for your sales team. You may just end up paying a whole lot of money for that top PPC position to access people who probably were on their way to your website already.

No immediate benefit to your prospect after they request a phone call.

The biggest issue here for me is that there is no end benefit for the prospect once they complete the form. A promise to contact your prospect within 24 hours is not a very compelling offer. If you want to generate new leads for your business, you should entice your prospect with content (whitepapers, webinars, free trials, etc) that satisfies an immediate need. By using this feature, you may actually lose conversions because you give the prospect no immediate benefit to "requesting a phone call".
